  IBEX 
  Capra pyrenaica   

     
 
Size:
around 120 cm long for a female and 145 cm for a male.

Weight:
up to 80 kg for an adult male.

Distinctive features:
its horns can reach 1m long and weigh 15kg!

  Reproduction:
one or sometimes two kids are born after a late rut in November to December.

Food:
grass, leaves of shrubs and lichen.

Habitat:
a true mountain-lover, ibex keep to the steep slopes which offer them safety. They can climb almost vertical rock faces.

In the Pyrenees:
hardly any Pyrenean ibex are left. Exterminated by hunting in France, this mountain animal survives in the Ordesa massif, Spain. An experimental programme to reintroduce ibex is currently underway, as the Pyrenean species is virtually extinct.
