  ANDORRA

Nestled between France and Spain, Andorra is one of the smallest, highest and richest countries in Europe.
The major asset of this independent, Catalan-speaking country, is that it is tax-free. Tourists flock to Andorre-la-Vieille, its capital, to buy duty-free products such as alcohol, tobacco, electronic goods and luxury items.

Behind the crowded showcases lie the real treasures. Its narrow streets lead to the Casa de la Vall, which dates back to the XVIth century, now the seat of the Andorran Parliament.

A sovereign state since 1993, Andorra can no longer live solely on business. To provide for the future, Andorra is beginning to make known its natural heritage. Its lakes, mountains and snowy slopes attract walkers and skiers.

Two natural sites are particularly impressive: In the centre of Andorra stands the majestic Casamanya, whose northern peak (easily accessible) soars to 2,740 m. Its central position makes it the ideal viewpoint to gaze out over the Andorran and Ariège mountains.
Don't miss the Pessons cirque on the southern slopes of the Envalira range. Shaped by quaternary glaciers, the cirque is dominated by Cubil, Pessons and Montmalus peaks. There are 21 small lakes in the granite cirque, whose scattered granite blocks talk of the eroding power of the glaciers.
