  BIARRITZ

Empress Eugenie fell under the enchantment of Biarritz, then a simple whale fishing village, transforming it into a famous seaside resort with sumptuous houses. It is currently one of the liveliest towns along the Basque coastline. Tourists are attracted by the various cultural events, thalassotherapy and the Edwardian charm that Biarritz has retained. Don't miss the Virgin's Rock, the main beach, the casino… Biarritz is a surfer's paradise due to its long beaches battered by enormous waves. It was here that the sport really took off in Europe in the late 50s.

Biarritz houses testify to the ostentious Edwardian era.

Fishing is part of Biarritz traditions: up to the XVIIIth century, whales represented the village's main source of income. A watchman up on the cliffs would see them spouting out to sea and immediately signal to the whalers to launch their boats. Today, the small port forms a kind of village next to the town. This is where you will see the low houses ("crampottes") built by sailors.

Le musée de la Mer de Biarritz (Sea life museum)
The sea life museum is on the esplanade of the Rocher-de-la-Vierge. It contains fascinating zoological, geological and ethnographic collections. The basement aquarium and terraced pools contain animals that live in the Bay of Biscay (seals and fish). The museum also houses numerous charts, navigation equipment and model boats. On the terrace you can see the science laboratories.
