  CARCASSONNE

Founded over 2,000 years ago, Carcassonne has one of the most extraordinary, well-preserved medieval decors in Europe.

Overlooking the Aude valley, the old City still looks like a medieval fortified town, surrounded by walls: there are three kilometres of ramparts and 26 towers. Its very stones bear witness to the art of fortification. From the ramparts you have a panoramic view over the Languedoc plain against a backdrop of the Pyrenees to the south and the Black Mountains to the north.

In the XIIIth century,
the city of Carcassonne
defended the border
with the kingdom of Aragon

Carcassonne was famous for its cloth manufacturing and wine industries, but difficulties in these sectors have led it to diversify into other industrial and commercial activities.

However, tourism has become the town's key asset. Over 2.5 million tourists flock to Carcassonne every year. Two summer highlights: the Carcassonne Festival (music, drama, street animations...) and "Les Médiévales", a costumed re-enactment of the City's history.

Historical highlights

The site was occupied by the bronze age.
Antiquity
The Carcasso oppidum was built in the IInd century B.C. It was occupied by the Visigoths, Sarrasins, then the Franks.
Middle ages
The town was taken over by the Counts of Barcelona then the Viscounts of Béziers. 1209 : After a 15-day siege, Carcassonne was taken over by Simon de Monfort, crusading against the Albigensians.
Given to the French kingdom, Carcassonne was close to the border with the kingdom of Aragon.
Saint Louis therefore ordered it to be fortified.
1659: The Pyrenees treaty moved the border much further south. Without its military role, the city gradually fell into disrepair.
Modern times
1844: Viollet-le-Duc restored the city in neo-gothical fashion.
