The town is built on a land of legend. Highway robbers haunted the middle moors which gave Lannemezan its name.

Despite the steep slope from Capvern, the town was linked by railway and has a wealthy industrial past in electrometallurgy. However, Pechiney gradually pulled out of all its Pyrenean sites, leaving Lannemezan to become just another township.
