Saint-Gaudens, opposite the Cagire range, dominates the Garonne valley. It is the capital of the former county of Comminges.

In the heart of a sheep- and cattle-rearing region between hills and mountains, Saint-Gaudens still has large cattle and sheep markets. It has specialized in paper pulp, making it a small but dynamic industrial centre.
